Quick checks first
Make sure the thermostat is set to heat and above room temperature, with fresh batteries if it uses them. Check that the furnace power switch is on and the breaker hasn't tripped. Look at the filter; a clogged one can shut the furnace down on overheating.
The power switch
Many furnaces have a switch that looks like a light switch, often near the furnace or at the top of the basement stairs. It's easy to flip off by mistake.
Cold air or short cycling
Cold air from the vents, a furnace that starts and stops every few minutes, or one that runs without warming the house can come from a dirty flame sensor, a failing igniter, airflow problems or a faulty control board.
Gas furnaces and safety
If you smell gas, leave the house and phone FortisBC's emergency line from outside. Gas furnaces must be repaired by a certified gasfitter. Every home with a gas furnace needs working carbon monoxide alarms.
Oil furnaces
Some older Greater Victoria homes still heat with oil. Oil furnaces need regular burner servicing, and an ageing system and tank may be worth replacing. See oil furnace replacement.
Repair or replace?
If the furnace is old, needs a costly part or the house is never comfortable, ask the technician to price a heat pump as well. Send a request and an HVAC technician will get in touch.

Frequently asked questions
- How long do furnaces last?
- Many gas furnaces last 15 to 20 years or more with maintenance. Age alone isn't a reason to replace a furnace that runs safely.
- Why does my furnace smell dusty when it starts?
- A light dusty smell the first time it runs in fall is normal and should fade. A burning, electrical or gas smell is not.
