Langford at a glance
Langford has more than 40,000 people, the largest of the West Shore communities and the third-largest municipality in the Capital Regional District. It was incorporated as a district on December 8, 1992, became a city in 2003, and is bordered by Colwood, the Highlands, Metchosin and View Royal.
What that means for your heating
Much of Langford has been built in the last three decades, so many homes have newer forced-air systems, heat pumps or electric baseboards. Newer, tighter homes heat up quickly in summer, and inland Langford is often warmer than downtown Victoria, so cooling is a common request. See air conditioning and cooling.
Hills and valleys
Homes on higher ground near Goldstream and the Highlands see colder nights and more frost than those near the water. A heat pump sized for the coldest nights at your location, not downtown's averages, avoids a cold house in a freeze.
A Hudson's Bay farm and a gold rush
Captain Edward Langford arrived in 1851 to run one of the Hudson's Bay Company's four farms near Victoria. In the early 1860s, a short-lived gold rush took place in what is now Goldstream Provincial Park. By the late 1800s, Victorians took the train out to the Goldstream House Hotel and summered at Langford Lake. Today it's the urban core of a West Shore of about 75,000 people. With so much new construction, many homeowners are still within warranty on their systems; regular maintenance keeps it valid.
