The Highlands at a glance
The District of Highlands, known locally as the Highlands, is one of the least developed parts of Greater Victoria, with about 2,225 people. It stretches along the Saanich Inlet shoreline from north of Goldstream to Mackenzie Bight, and its nearest shopping is in Langford.
What that means for your heating
Homes here are spread out among hills, lakes and forest, often on rural roads without natural gas. Heat pumps, wood stoves, propane and electric baseboards are common. A ductless heat pump paired with an existing wood stove is a practical upgrade for many.
Higher, colder nights
Higher ground means more frost and the odd snowfall that stays longer than in town. Outdoor heat pump units need a raised stand so defrost water and snow don't build up around them.
Parks all around
The district is best known for its lakes, hills and wilderness, including large parts of Gowlland Tod Provincial Park, Mount Work Regional Park and Lone Tree Hill Regional Park, along with Caleb Pike Heritage Park. Children attend Sooke School District schools in Langford. Rural homes far from service depots benefit most from regular maintenance before winter; a fall tune-up catches worn parts before a breakdown. See HVAC maintenance.
