Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pumps in Victoria, BC

Ductless mini-splits are heat pumps without the ducts. An outdoor unit connects to one or more wall-mounted heads indoors through a small hole in the wall, so they suit older homes, additions and suites.

How they work

Each indoor head heats or cools its own room or zone and has its own remote or thermostat. One outdoor unit can run a single head or several, depending on the model.

Good fits

Homes heated by electric baseboards, oil or gas boilers, or wood stoves; heritage houses where running ducts would mean opening plaster walls; garage conversions, additions and secondary suites; and upstairs bedrooms that overheat in summer.

Placing the heads

Heads go high on a wall where air can reach the room. Bedrooms often get small heads; open living areas may need a larger one. The outdoor unit needs a solid base, clearance for airflow and a spot where defrost water can drain away.

Upkeep

Wash the indoor filters every month or two, keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves and plants, and have the system serviced periodically so coils and drain lines stay clean.

Repairs

No heat, water dripping from a head, a musty smell, ice that won't clear from the outdoor unit or error codes. Many problems trace back to clogged filters or drain lines; refrigerant or electrical faults need a certified technician.

Plan the system

Tell the technician which rooms are hardest to heat or cool. Send a request and an HVAC technician will get in touch.

Cold-climate models

Choose a model rated to keep heating at low temperatures, even in Victoria, so it handles the rare deep cold snap.

Frequently asked questions

Can one outdoor unit heat my whole house?
Some multi-zone units can serve several heads, but very large or open homes may need more than one outdoor unit. A heat-loss calculation tells you.
Are the indoor heads noisy?
Modern heads are quiet on low settings. Placement and correct sizing make a difference.
