Common problems

Cold radiators or zones, banging or gurgling pipes, a boiler that locks out, pressure that climbs or drops, or water leaking from valves, radiators or the boiler itself.

Bleeding radiators

Air trapped at the top of a radiator stops it heating fully. Bleeding it with a radiator key releases the air; if radiators need bleeding often, there may be a leak or a pressure problem worth checking.

Pressure and expansion

Hydronic systems run at a set pressure, with an expansion tank to absorb the change as water heats. A failed expansion tank or pressure valve can make the relief valve drip or the pressure gauge swing.

Replacing an old boiler

Modern high-efficiency boilers use much less fuel than old cast-iron units. Another option is an air-to-water heat pump that heats the same radiators or floors, depending on the system's design.

Gas safety

Gas boilers must be serviced by a certified gasfitter, with working carbon monoxide alarms in the home. A yellow or lazy flame, soot or a CO alarm needs attention right away.

Get it looked at

Mention whether you have radiators, baseboard convectors or in-floor heat. Send a request and an HVAC technician will get in touch.

In-floor heat

Radiant floors are comfortable and quiet but slow to respond. Set the thermostat and leave it rather than turning it up and down. Leaks in tubing under floors are rare but need specialist leak detection.

Water quality

Hydronic systems need clean, treated water. Sludge from corrosion can block valves and pumps; a technician can flush the system and add inhibitor where it's appropriate.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a heat pump to a boiler system?
Sometimes. An air-to-water heat pump can feed some hydronic systems, and ductless heads can cool rooms the boiler heats. A technician can assess your system.
Why is one radiator cold?
Trapped air, a closed or stuck valve, or a balancing problem are the usual causes.
